I think they could be true. I want them to be true. But I could also see them being a complete load of bunk.
Look, it’s like this: “Starfield” is a pretty graphics-intensive game, but on top of that, it also puts a lot of pressure on your main CPU. The Xbox Series X can play the game pretty well at 1080p, but if you want to go to higher settings, you’d better set the Graphics to “Performance” quality, or you’ll pretty much be locked to 30 frames per second.
Now obviously a good gaming PC won’t have these issues, but we’re not talking about PCs. I don’t even think the Playstation 5 will struggle that much with the game, it should be able to handle it just as well as the XSX can, if not better. But we’re not even talking about the PS5 here.
We’re talking about the Nintendo Switch 2, and I don’t care how beefed up that system is over its predecessor. It will struggle with “Starfield”. I’m not sure it will be able to even do 1080p at 30 fps, at least not without some serious optimization.
Furthermore, what about mods? “Starfield” is frankly dependent upon mods to flesh out the game, but they can lag down a system, and they take up a lot of room. I’m concerned that the Switch 2 will bog down on the main game, bog down even more trying to run mods, and that all of this may just take up way too much room on the system.
For example: The Nintendo Switch 2 has 256gb of internal storage space, some of which will be unavailable due to system files. That’s way more than the Switch comes with, but still a paltry amount compared to what other consoles have. While you can upgrade this with a microSD card… a very fast, very expensive microSD card… these aren’t easily obtained at this time.
“Starfield” itself is over 125gb, before updates and mods. How do you feel about buying an expensive microSD card to hold basically one game?
Now then, I’m not against the idea of “Starfield” coming to the Switch 2. In fact, if it happens, I’ll be buying a Switch 2 just for that game. I would love to be able to take “Starfield” with me wherever I go. I just have concerns that the game might be a bit too much for this particular platform, since the XSX (and likely the PS5) are a bit too underpowered for its full potential.
There’s no way it’ll do 60 fps.
There’s no way it’ll do 1080p in handheld mode.
There’s no way it’ll do 4K in any mode.
It WILL eat a huge amount of storage space on the device. So in the end, is it worth it?
